Jennifer is a Victoria B.C. based teacher who welcomes students of all levels, ages, and abilities to explore singing and performing in a studio setting. Trained as a classical vocalist, Jennifer also has a background in musical theatre and can help students of all genres develop a healthy singing technique and compelling performance skills. She is currently on faculty at the Victoria Conservatory of Music while also maintaining a small private studio with the option for online lessons.
As a teacher, Jennifer strives to help each student discover their unique sound and full vocal potential through a healthy singing technique based on body resonance and vocal freedom. She encourages her students to develop a musical curiosity and strong emotional connection to the text and to become powerful performers on stage. Students will develop these skills through an interdisciplinary approach to singing that draws on vocal technique, musical interpretation, textual analysis and interpretation, body awareness, and theater. Jennifer is happy to mentor students and work towards specific goals including RCM exams, festivals, auditions, or upcoming concerts. She often works with choristers who are looking to gain confidence in their singing and musical abilities.
Jennifer holds a Certificate in Vocal Pedagogy from the Victoria Conservatory of Music where she studied with the wonderful sopranos Nancy Argenta and Ingrid Attrot. This program emphasized a scientific approach to understanding the mechanics of singing with a focus on anatomy of the singing body. This program also included a thorough overview of the classical vocal repertoire and an in-depth exploration of the Royal Conservatory of Music syllabus for repertoire grades 1 – 10.
Jennifer also holds a M.Mus degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Manitoba, a Diploma in Music in Performance from the Victoria Conservatory of Music, an M.A. in Cultural Studies from Queen’s University, and a B.A. in French Literature from the University of Victoria.
